The National Gallery of Art (NGA) recently hosted a comprehensive three-day “Professional Staff Train the Trainer” capacity-building workshop, focusing on essential topics to enhance the operational capabilities of its staff. The workshop covered:
- Innovative Artistic Education Services within an Internally Generated Revenue Framework.
- Art Business Strategies, and
- Models of Art Gallery Management.
Each session consisted of a structured format that included discussions led by a chief facilitator, interactive comment periods, and breakout workshops, with outcomes presented as detailed reports. Participants reported being exposed to new ideas and inspired to explore innovative approaches.
The first session emphasized the critical need for innovation within the NGA’s professional departments, particularly in adapting to a changing funding landscape. A shift in mindset was highlighted as essential for positioning the organization for impactful results.
The discussions on art business strategies defined strategy as a vital skill for achieving impact. Participants explored key strategies necessary for optimal performance in the art market, including the importance of refreshing business images, attitudes, and areas for exploration, alongside the need for current technical support.
The final session targeted top management and focused on various models of art gallery management—addressing their origins, contexts, and outcomes within a business environment. Recommendations were made regarding the optimal model for the NGA.

Throughout the workshop, it became evident that the NGA’s original vision and core values may hinder its ability to operate in accordance with international best practices. The discussions underscored the need for a comprehensive re-engineering of the organization, starting from its foundational purpose and extending to the adoption of forward-thinking ideas, skill acquisition for personnel, and infrastructure improvements.
This workshop, expertly led by Prof. Osa Egonwa, represents a crucial step towards empowering NGA staff and enhancing the gallery’s cultural impact in Nigeria and beyond.
